ESL delivers a portfolio of undergraduate degrees (with Foundation Year) with British partner universities, from seven campuses across the UK. All assessments are designed and delivered by the relevant partner university, with the expectation that they are marked locally by ESL. We are proud to be launching a new and robust marking and moderation process, aligning standards with QAA, OfS, and Advance HE expectations. As an ESL examiner (marker), you will play a key role in this process. You will mark completed exam papers and/or submitted coursework assessments from across a range of partner university degree programmes by applying the relevant marking criteria (rubric). Role is for open for both Part Time (Zero Hour) and Contract.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Review and evaluate examination papers, assignments, or other assessment materials promptly and accurately
- Ensure adherence to marking criteria, assessment guidelines, and quality standards
- Provide constructive feedback and comments on student work to facilitate their learning and improvement
- Maintain confidentiality and integrity throughout the marking process
- Collaborate with other examiners/markers and academic staff as needed to ensure consistency and fairness in assessment practices
- Participate in training sessions and meetings to stay updated on assessment procedures and requirements
- Complete marking assignments within specified deadlines and timelines
- You will work within a team under the guidance of a Moderator, who will train you in the specific requirements of each assessment, including the level of feedback expected
- They will also deliver marking standardisation/calibration, a process you must successfully complete before you start marking to ensure you are applying the marking criteria fairly and accurately
- Once you have completed this, you will be allocated a set number of scripts to mark by a given deadline
- Marking of submitted coursework will occur within Turnitin
- Ideally, you will have experience of using Turnitin for marking and feedback, though training will be provided
- While marking, you will be expected to look out for signs of potential academic misconduct, using Turnitin tools (understanding similarity scores, authorship tool, and AI tool) and your own linguistic analysis
- Any suspected cases must be raised by completing an Academic Misconduct Form and following internal processes
- Training will be provided on how to identify different types of academic misconduct
- Your marking will be spot-checked by the Moderator to ensure consistency and accuracy of allocated grades and feedback
- You will receive regular feedback on this and if necessary, additional training
About You
- A teaching qualification or a degree in a related subject
- Subject expertise
- Computer/IT literate
- Proven previous experience of marking assessments (level 3 and above) by applying grading criteria and providing detailed feedback
- Understanding of linguistic features of writing, including grammar and style
- Attention to detail – ability to mark and feedback according to set standards
- Timekeeping – ability to meet deadlines
- Have access to a secure PC with a firewall, up to date anti-virus software, private broadband access and a personal, private e-mail account
- Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Teamwork attitude with good interpersonal skills and ability to follow direction
- Awareness of and adherence to GDPR
Desirable Requirements
- A master’s degree in a relevant subject
- Level-7 Teaching Diploma (eg, Cambridge Delta or Trinity TESOL)
- UK HE teaching and/or examining experience within the last three years
- Experience of using Turnitin to grade and provide feedback
- Experience of using Turnitin tools to check for potential academic misconduct
- Experience of working for established examination boards (eg, Cambridge, IELTS, OCR, Trinity)

- All marking will occur online by accessing submitted scripts directly through Turnitin within the VLE
- The amount of work involved will depend on the type and length of assessment you will be marking
- Typically, the marking window 7 calendar days for first marking (exact dates and times will be communicated to you)
- For units with performance-based assessments, you may need to visit an ESL centre
- For this reason, we do ask that examiners are UK-based and live within acceptable commuting distance of one of our nationwide centres (London, Manchester, Leicester, Northampton, Birmingham, and Leeds)
